What is the One-Child Policy? The oOne-cChild pPolicy was a policy implemented by the Chinese government as a method of controlling the population. The One-Child pPolicy was introduced in 1979 by the then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, in response to an explosive population growth. This policy mandated that couples from China’s Han majority could only have one child. This was intended to alleviate the social, economic and environmental problems associated with the country’s rapidly growing population.
The policy was strictly enforced by the cChinaese government. Couples who had more than one child would be fined. Families could have another child but that would result in the death of their first child and only child due to a natural disaster or if the child was handicapped. Rich couples could have another child, but only if they'ire first child was a girl. This resulted in a high rise in abortions of female fetuses ( which was made possible after ultrasound sex determination became available). AndThere was an increase in the number of female children who were placed in orphanages or were abandoned, and even infanticide of baby girls. The government encouraged birth-control, pressured men to be sterilized, and if thea woman was pregnant with her second child, she would be forced to an abortion.
How was the One-Child Policy somewhat a good thing for China? It controlled the growth of the population, that was the number one reason. Poverty eradication gave everyone jobs so no one is really poor anymore. Compliance with results in benefits, this means you will get paid if you wait to have children, therefore you can pay for all the things you need to prepare for your first child so that neither you, nor your child will have to struggle. Increased food supply,. China was running out of food supply and with the oOne c-Child pPolicy, food resources went up. Overall, better living standards, big families can cost tons and tons of money, but with the oOne-cChild pPolicy, it's easier to save money! Maintaining a stable labor rate, instead of there being crowed workers in one working area or people not being able to get a job, with othe One-cChild pPolicy, it helps manage workers in an area. Also, since now that couples could have only one child and they then preferred a male child, Wwhen they became old enough to be married, there were very few females available for the males to marry.
How was the One-Child pPolicy a bad thing? The country’s overall sex ratio,. tThe sex ratio became skewed towards males roughly between 3 and 4 percent more males than females. Traditionally, male children have been preferred as sons to inherit the family name and property and are responsible for the care of elderly parents. The policy was a growing proportion of elderly people, the result of the concurrent drop in children born and rise in longevity since 1980. That became a concern, as the great majority of senior citizens in China relied on their children for support after they retired, and there were fewer children to support them. Some couples decided to hide their first child from the government,. tThis meant that the child would go undocumented and would have a hard time getting a job and an education without a birth certificate.
