My name is Anbareen Arif Abeer. I am currently pursuing a degree in Visual Studies with a minor in aArchitecture. I was born in Pakistan, and my family moved to Canada 15 years ago., and I have been exposed to music throughout my life. My dfadther used to listen to a variety of songs including Bollywood, and Spanish and Asian classical music.
Even though I have been b
rought up witoh music a lot throughout my childhood, I don’t have a lot of experience in playing different instruments. I took piano claesseons in grade 7, which were mandatory for everyone. We learned how to play children's songs such as mMary hHad a lLittle lLamb, or bBaba bBlack sShieep., but I have always had a problem with reading notes. I was never the type of child who would glance at their notes while playing an instrument., I would always memorized the rhythm or the beats instead. I also tried learning how to play a violin by myself, which did not go very well,. hHowever, I am interested in learning how to play drums. I feel like drums would be an easy instrument for me to plays since it allows you to follow some kind of a beat.
I was born in Lahore, Pakistan and moved to Canada when I was in grade 6. My
dfadther used to listen to a lot of old Australian and American music in Pakistan and that influenced the type of music I listen to today. I do listen to a lot of Pakistani and Bollywood music as well, since they both share the same language, especially coke studio, a company that focuses on using traditional and modern instruments to create music. I really like the fact that they shoot the video live so you can see whatich instruments are being played in the background of the singer. My choice in music did change a lot when I moved to Canada. I use to listen to a lot of Celine Deion when I was in Pakistan, but once I moved to Canada, Mmy cousins introduced me to RNB and Rap music.
As a child I was mostly exposed to Pakistani and Bollywood music
in, Pakistan,d occasionally my dfadther would put on some American music. Once I moved to Canada, I started listening to artists such as Shakira and Bette Midler. My class actually sang a song “Wings bBeneath mMy wWing” by Bette Midler to our principale for her retirement party in grade 8. After we moved to a new place, I started listening to RNB and rap. I think my music choice depended a lot on the neighbourhood I used to live in. The children at my school mostainly use to listened to RNB and rap, which made me listen to it and like it as well. After a few years, I didn’t listen to much music, only the stuff that was on the radio.
Once I moved again, I started to listen to pop culture music. One artist I really liked was Avril Lavigne,. I used to listen to all her songs and wanted her hair style as well. At this age, I was listening to whatever was most popular at the time. Iand didn’t have muchany of my own music tastes developed. I think it was grade 12 and first year of university when I first started developing my own taste in music. I was still listening to pop culture music, but at the same time, I was getting more into classical music. Yiannis Chryssomallis, a Greek composer and music producer was one of my favorite artists. I really enjoyed how he used exotic instruments to create music. His music gave me a sense of being back home in Pakistan even though Pakistani music and his music were totally different.
