The post-martial residence plays a role in gender in non-foraging societies, and there are mainly two type of kinship or post-martial residences, which are related to blood or by marriage or by law. For example, in Yanomamo society, everyone is called by some kinship, which means blood relatives.
The Minangkabau is an Indonesian tribe, whicho lived around the highlands of west Sumatra. Their population is approximately four millions, and mostly were Muslim by religion., Wwhereas, the Yanomamo wasere a South American tribe and they lived in a tropical climate. It was considered as one of the primitive tribes, and the last culture to come into contact witoh the wider world.
A woman in the Minangkabau society maintains families, controls money, and acts as a head of the household. In this culture, they place more importance towards the girls instehadn ofthe boys. On the other hand, women in Yanomami society do not participate in politics, but weave baskets, raise children, and perform mostly daily household activities.
Marriage in these both cultures are mostly similar in that they prefer to marry cross cousin, and maen will pay for taking the girls. However, in the Yanomamo society, an average man marries up to three women, and it look like polygamy still exists in this society.
In Minangkabau society, they send school to their children to school, women are respected in the family, and teenagers are rencommenduraged to leave the house so that they can gain new experiences. In contrast, in Yanomamo society, children are expected to help their mother at least four hours a day. Females born disabled will be killed, and importance is given to sons.
Minangkabau is a feminist society, and they believe women are important, but in the Yanomamo women were dominated andby wtheire abhusebands and bya patheriarchal h
society.
Big Men achieve political power by his skills and wisdom that he was able to organize a lavish “gift-giving”. Such gift giving signifies friendships, alliances between the tribes, and maintains peace among the tribes. Big men had a large group of people in his back and he provides economic assistance to his people. He provides assistance to those people to increase his social standing in the community. Therefore, he achieved political power.
His power is rooted in their economic endeavors on things like trade, and feasts. To illustrate, he was the first entrepreneur, who is able to generate profits on selling pigs and foods. After he made a surplus, he used those money to finance public giveaways, which helped him to build his reputation. Hence, his power was rooted to their economic endeavors.
Warfare is more common among tribal societies than among bands because of bands defending the territories from invaders and conflict tended to be rare. First, tribes value land, and surplus food as important resources. These can be acquired through war. Second, Ttribes enculturate some members to be warriors. Third, tribes are more lethal technology.
