It is well known that animal shows have been the object of human’s amusement for centuries. Some aspects of an animal's well-being are fully covered in the zoo, like providing enough food, shades and a nearly natural environment. However, other aspects less evident like dthe lack of space remain unacceptable.
I was sailing the internet when one video posted online caught my attention. The first feeling was overwhelming, a mix of disgust, disapprovingal and sadness. The killer whale was restrained in a pool which was about 10ten times bigger than she was. How can we compare the wide ocean with a pool? What really made me feel powerless was seeing hundreds of people laughing and applauding the show, not wanting to see through it. Of course the whale was jumping, playing and giving “kisses” to her trainers. Nevertheless, it justonly takes a little bit of empathy to understand the emptiness of a kiss given in exchange of food.
On the other hand, my uncle posted a video of his summer vacation trip to the Balear Islands. While sailing to Menorca, some joyful dolphins came to compete against the boat, trying to be faster. All the crew was delighted to see free dolphins in their natural habitat and behavior. Having said that, if people feel peaceful while seeing absolute animal freedom, why can’t they feel remorseful while seeing imprisonment?
