George Kelly (1992), in his psychology of personal constructs is “based in the implementation of the philosophical assumption that the events we face today can be constructed and interpreted in many ways”. According to him, and also mentioned by Professor Safayeni’s lecture #2, “wWe can change or replace the way we interpret events through event anticipation, construct modification and application in knowledge engineering”. Therefore, “wWe don’t just react to situations, but we act and make decisions based on our personal constructs”.
An example of how I used Kelly’s theory of personal constructs in a behavioural interview to my advantage was when I was interviewed for my current job. I was asked to “give an example of how I keep track of things requiring attention”. I answered this question from my personal constructs of how accountants deal with recurring activities, like accelerating cash flows through proactive account management and collection process, taking advantage of the terms of accounts payables, and keeping track of dates to submit government remittances ( employees' source deductions, GST remittance and closing activities). Even though I did not have any accounting work experience besides my educational background in Aaccounting., Tthe hiring manager hired me based on the answers I gave her.
