Dear Admissions Committee:
My name is XXX, and I am a 2016 graduate of the University of XXX who studied Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in Cell and Tissue Engineering. I am applying to the Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering at (university).
During my four years at the University of XXX, my challenging curriculum has given me a solid academic foundation with multidisciplinary courses in areas such as advanced mathematics, statistics, mechanics, basic electrical engineering, chemistry, biology, and anatomy. I also learned chemical engineering concepts such as fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and thermodynamics. Furthermore, I took organic chemistry and biochemistry courses to gain a better understanding of cell biology and pharmaceuticals in relation to my concentration of cell and tissue engineering. I had multiple projects in my BME curriculum that gave me a glimpse of critical thinking skills required for engineers including a circuit for measuring blood oxygen concentration and a MATLAB program to measure vasculature from sample MRI images. Most importantly, my Senior Design project involved designing an interface for MRI scanners that allowed the software to properly image the fetal heart. This was a challenging project that required me and my group to consult with doctors and experts in different fields such as electrical engineering and medical imaging to complete our project. During this project, I took on the role as the leader of our project team and was particularly interested in testing each subsystem of the prototype.
As an undergraduate student, I have spent all three summers and six semesters during the school year working in research laboratories. During my first summer, I worked at XXX University and investigated behavior and brain data involving ischemic stroke model mice and the p53 gene. After this experience, I shifted to immunology work at the University of XXX Medical Center and learned techniques involving cell culture and microscopy. I used microscopes to image cells in a microarray and subsequently analyzed these images with MATLAB programs. Towards the end of my time in this lab, I focused on antibody production in hybridoma cells, cell transfections, and DNA isolation and sequencing. This extensive and invaluable laboratory background allowed me to improve my critical thinking skills and allowed me to realize that I enjoyed finding solutions for challenging problems.
My academic, research, and project experiences gave me an introduction of this engineering field, but there is a lot more to learn. There are many unsolved problems out there, and I would like to make a difference in this field. With the courses offered at (University), this MS program will deeply enhance my technical knowledge in the biomedical engineering field which will subsequently jump start my career in a Research & Development or System Engineer role for medical devices.
All in all, the MS program in Biomedical Engineering at [university] is a perfect fit for me. With my undergraduate BME program at the University of XXX, I have gained experiences in engineering skills, the engineering design process, and FDA regulatory information, which have prepared me for an advanced degree. The technical knowledge I will gain from this MS program at (University) will further put me on the right track to a successful career.
Thank you for your consideration!
Sincerely,
XXX
