In “ The Rocking-Horse Winner,” by David Herbert Lawrence, the author created a tragic and moving story, in which the readers involves their feelings with the characters. Lawrence's way to portray the trauma was well established. His goal to entertain and delight the reader was accomplished. The suspense hooks the reader in such a way that they are forced to continue reading. The theme also contains a message that makes anyone reflect and value the people around onthemselves. Lawrence's way of describing the theme was clear, since many writers have used a similar theme, but not as touching as he describes it.
Lawrence did not dedicate his time to describe physically the characters physically. The description was very simple. In addition, it is very vague, because the only thing that described the child is this sentence "Paul gave a blue glare from his big, rather close set eyes" and his mother, Hester, as "a woman who was beautiful”.” With the features so limited, one can not imagine a physical portrayedal of the characters. The two daughters and the father were never mentioned after one or two conversations. Although, the lack of physical description was evident. Lawrence gave an idea of the psychology of the characters. Hester was unhappy because love brought nothing good in her life,. Lawrence illustrates that "she married for love, and the love turned to dust"." She focused her attention ion material things. Paul craved the love that his mother coldly rejected. The author illustrated for us that "This angered him somewhat, and made him want to compel her attention"." The writer made Paul so innocent and vulnerable on purpose, to make one feel sympathy towards him, because anyone can feel related to it. Paul's last words before dying were directed to his mother, looking for her approval "... Do you think I'm lucky. mother?... over eighty thousand pounds! I call that lucky, don't you, mother?".
