When sounds are perceived in both ears, it is called hearing binaurally. When sounds are perceived in one ear, it is called hearing monaurally (Dillon, 2012). A normal-hearing individual tends to hear sounds binaurally, with both ears. Hearing aids are used to overcome the deficits accompanying a hearing loss, whether that be for one ear or both ears. People who wear hearing aids in both ears have a unilateral fitting. While, on the contrary, people who wear hearing aids in one ear have a unilateral fitting. Loss of hearing in one ear will leave a person with a significant hearing discrepancy in many listening environments (Dillon, 2012). If a hearing loss occurs in just one ear, should a person be amplified bilaterally? Listening with two ears instead of one provides both, advantages and disadvantages.
