Cellular migration is driven by the polymerization and depolymerization of cytoskeleton fibers. The properties of the cell cytoskeleton are quantitatively described by Young's modulus. The value of Young's modulus determines the ability of a cell to deform under the influence of an external force, i.e. cells with high deformability are characterized by lower values of Young's modulus, while cells with less deformability have a higher Young's modulus. Our recent studies have shown that the deformability of WJ-MSCs is an important factor affecting the ability to transendothelial migration and invasion of WJ MSCsWJ-MSCs through a porous filter [106]. By combining Boyden chamber migration tests and measurements of cell deformability using an atomic force microscope (AFM), it has been observed that cells with the potential of transendothelial migration and invasion are characterized by greater deformability [106]. Also in studies conducted by McGrail et al., it has been shown that loss of MSCs flexibility leads to a decrease in MSCs motility in the wound healing test [107].
