Hello, my name is Sydney Fillios, and yes, I am a moving pro. I used to be known as the “new girl” but now, after living in Ohio for 4 years, I am simply known by my name.
For the first five years of my adolescence, I moved almost every year. From Connecticut to North Carolina, to Michigan, to China, to Michigan again, and finally to my current home of Ohio; I have mastered the intricacies of moving. The art of packing up every single item of clothing I own into a handful of boxes, the method of leaving my friends and family, the adaptation it takes to go to a new school...I am a pro. With all of these accumulated skills, I have discovered my passion and interest for traveling.
Spending 2 years of my upbringing in a foreign country was the perfect taste of studying abroad. I got to live in the biggest city in China; - Shanghai. I learned how to speak Mandarin at age eleven, ate the best Chinese food ever (obviously), and was grateful enough to travel to other countries in South Asia.
With the College of Charleston’s study abroad program, I can finally be able to repeat this type of experience but in a new area and with a more developed mindset. I can once again live in a new country; something I have longed to do ever since I moved back to the U.S. I can learn a new language, a new culture, a new activity, a new religion, etc. I can be the “new girl” once again but in a new light.
