Obesity, in general, refers to exaggerated body fat, and is a significant public health worry. andAnd its occurrence has reached an epidemic rate in both developing, as well as developed countries.
Obesity tends to affect more than one-third of the population around the world. Globally, obesity is evaluated to cause more than 2.8 million mortalities. If such secular trends continue, an evaluated 20% of the worldwide population will be affected by obesity by 2030, while 38% will be overweight.
The diffusion of obesity in Gulf Countriescountries between children and adolescents ranges from 5% to 14% in males and from 3% to 18% in young females.
Data are rare from other Middle Eastern countries; however, compelling evidence is present, indicating the increase in obesity rates. For example, recent surveys found that in Kuwait, 48% of women and 36% of men were obese, whereas 77% of women and 74% of men were overweight. WhileHowever, 44% of the women population and 28% of the male population from Saudi Arabia were found to be obese. However, 71% of females and 66% of males were reported to be overweight [1].
Saudi Arabia has relatively high rates of overall obesity and overweight individuals, which are significantly increasing over the years.
According to World Atlas data, Saudi Arabia is in the list of most obese counties in the world (Figure 1), which has resulted from lower regular exercise or physical activities, and increased consumption of fast food [2].
