According to Rao (2019), the English language is used as a means of communication and teaching at all educational levels in Jordan as a global trend towards change and development. As directed by the ministry of higher education in Jordan, there are four major skills that a learner of the English language needs to master throughout his or her academic journey. This includes listening, reading, speaking and writing. Among these basic skills, the most intricate to master is probably the reading skill since it is a complex activity that involves many elements, each of which may be a source of problem for readers: imperfect fit, Arabic EnglishArabic/English graphic contrast, vocabulary, grammar and content (Altin & Saracaloğlu, 2018).
Reading comprehension is a complex process of interaction that requires reader grounded comprehension skills. This means that the reader attempts to comprehend the text by using his or her prior knowledge, and the information that can be found in the text to construct the meaning. This involves both the cognitive and mental processing skills in both fiction and non-fiction texts. A reader is meant to think, identify, decode, encode, process, build and organize information as well as interpret (Kiu & Yamat, 2020).
