WithinIn the film, the director successfully used many audio techniques to convey emotions to the audience. The most successful techniques used were diegetic dialogue and non-diegetic silence, which conveyed Molly’s thoughts and feelings in times of hardship. Specifically, the non-diegetic sound was used when the girls collapsed in the desert after walking in dead-silencedeathly silence. This shows that the girls have to preserve all the energy they have;, putting one foot in front of the other is excruciating enough. This scene effectively positionsputs the audience toin a position where they empathise and understand the disparity the girls experience; a sense of desolation, being utterly lost, and the lack of hope the desert brings. Expanding on the effective use of the non-diegetic silence, is diegetic dialogue. It is used when the girls sleep at Moore River on the second night. As Molly lies in bed, she whispers: “bad place.” She then has flashbacks of her negative experiences: Moodoo staring ominously at her, Neville bending down towards her, Constable Riggs and Miss Jessup. Back in bed, she says between mental flashes: “They make me sick-these people. Sick. Make me sick.” The bitterness in her tone suggests the extent of her hatred and disgust towards people who had taken her from her home. This reflection was the catalyst for her decision to run away. As a result, the director successfully used audio elements to evoke discouragement and disgust towards the environments and people that pursue her.
