Alexander deserves the title “the Great” because of his accomplishments, smart planning, and loyalty to his army. He became king at a young age and brought different lands together. One source says, “Alexander the Great served as King of Macedonia from 336 to 323 B.C.. During his time of leadership, he united Greece, reestablishedre-established the Corinthian League and conquered the Persian Empire” (Document 4). This proves how much he achieved and how brave he was during his 13 years as king. He also showed strong planning skills when he captured the Persian capital of Persepolis in 330 B.C., took its treasures, and burned the city (Document 5). By doing this, he hurt the empire’s power without dragging his soldiers into a long war, showing that he was careful and wanted to keep them safe.
Alexander also showed great loyalty to his men. In one speech, he told them, “You and I, gentlemen, have shared the work and the danger, and the rewards are for all of us” (Document 1). This shows that he cared about his soldiers and was willing to face the same risks they did, instead of sending them into battle alone. With his many successes, his smart strategies, and his loyalty to his army, Alexander proved that he truly earned the title “the Great.”.
